The purpose of this Web page is to give you a sampling of some of aspects of food like your practiced with in Unit 4. Each of the activities gives you an opportunity to investigate food related topics. Really try to find things that you can connect with. Good luck and have fun!
The following links come from all over the World Wide Web and represent a variety of viewpoints. You may complete the following Internet activities alone or by working in a group. You may complete all or only some of the activities depending on your goals.
Cooking Terms and Recipes
Dictionary of Cooking
|(1) Visit the food network. Use the encyclopedia to look up some of the following cooking methods: stir fry, broil, rotisserie, deep-fat frying, grill, sauté, planking, paper cookery, scald, simmer, poaching, casserole, blanch. Write up definitions for five of them. |
|(2) Write a short recipe for a dish you like. Be sure to use the correct terminology. Use the glossary. |
|(3) Are these cooking methods used in your country? Write a short report about the any different ones that are common in your country. |
|1. Go to the "Have-a-Bite-Cafe". Follow the instructions on the page and choose a meal. Be honest. |
|2. When you are finished, analyze your choice. Was it a healthy one? |
|3. Try again and again until you find a healthy choice. Write it down. Prepare your menu and share it with your classmates. |
Street Food Around the World
|(1) Go to the Street Food Around the World site. Choose a nationality that sounds interesting and investigate what kind of street food is found in that country. |
|(2) Write the recipe for one of the dishes presented. Be sure to use: First, Then, Next, After that and Finally. Include the name of the food and where it is eaten. |
|(3) Write a recipe for some street food from your country. |

|(1) Visit the Food Museum and look for your favorite foods. |
|(2) Choose five different foods and investigate where they originated. |
|(3) Write a short report about them. Include a world map showing where they came from. |
Samplers are a kind of web experience in which learners are presented with a limited number of websites to visit. These sites are organized around a specific topic. Students are asked to respond to the activities from a personal perspective. Rather than uncover hard knowledge (as they do in a Treasure Hunt), students are asked about their perspectives on topics, comparisons to experiences they have had, interpretations of artworks or data, or create their own original experiences.
After you have talked about the general theme, invite the students to visit one or more of the pages and do the activities. Then they can share their results in small groups.
